Fog Lights

• In Europe, it?s mandatory to use rear fog lights when visibility is less than 50 meters due to snowfall, heavy rain, and fog. These fog lights must have good intensity and placement, meeting the standards set by the European Economic Area (EEA).

Headlights

It?s also known as headlamps and has only basic forward illumination. They are specially designed to be used at night or in low-light conditions.

2. Xenon/HID Headlights

• Laser headlights are made up of advanced automotive lighting technology and offer several benefits like higher brightness, longer range, energy efficiency, long lifespan, compact size, and have ability to spread light up to 600 meters on the road surface. 

Key Difference Between Fog Light and Headlights

1. Beam Pattern

Fog Light-Fog lights eliminate a flare and wide beam light that cover the road surface and edges. It does not spread many lights in the upward direction. They illuminate lights only in focused areas where the driver wants more lightning.

Headlight- TheHeadlights beam pattern spreads light in both directions upward as well as on the road surface. They are designed to illuminate the road and potential hazards at a greater distance, typically up to about 100 meters for low beams and 200 meters for high beams.

2. Mounting Position

Fog light- Fog light reduces glare due to its position on the lower side of the vehicles, usually lower than the main headlight.

Headlights- The headlight mounting position is higher and set on the front of the vehicles. This higher position allows headlights to reflect light further down the road and illuminate potential threads at a greater distance.

3. Intensity and Range

Fog Light- Fog lights have less intensity and a shorter range as compared to regular headlights because they are designed for short-range and focused areas.

Headlights-  Headlights have more intensity and illuminate a longer distance ahead. Generally, headlights come into two modes: high beam for maximum visibility, and low beam for general use. 

4. Legal Requirement

Fog Light- Many countries have different rules for using fog light and some countries declare it illegal to use front fog light in clear conditions because it?s designed to be used in only bad weather conditions when visibility is less than 100 meters.

Headlights- For headlights no specific rules for use. However, the use of high beams of headlights is typically restricted when there are oncoming vehicles or when following closely behind another vehicle.

1. Fog Light Maintenance

• You should check regularly and clean fog light lenses to ensure maximum effectiveness.
• Ensure fog lights are properly working or not in bad weather conditions.
• Replace bulbs as needed, and use only high-quality fog light.

2. Headlight Maintenance

• You should need to clean the headlight lenses regularly to maintain optimal light output.
• Adjust your bulbs if necessary and check the headlight aim periodically.
• If you want to replace bulbs then replace them in pairs to ensure even illumination.
• For HID or LED headlights, you need to go to mechanic shops for replacement of bulbs.
